Constantia
Wine Route
Constantia is the birthplace of the wine farming
industry in South Africa. As you drive through the beautiful
historical valley it is no wonder the first Governor of the Cape,
Simon van der Stel, chose this situation for his farm, Constantia.
Steenberg Estate is the oldest farm in the Cape Peninsula. The
land was originally granted to a young widow, Catharina Ras,
in 1682, by Simon van der Stel, and wines were first produced
in 1695. Steenberg wines have been awarded many international
and local accolades for their outstanding quality. Amongst the
latest is the gold award for the 1999 Steenberg Sauvignon Blanc
(Reserve) at the 1999 Michaelangelo International Wine Awards
ceremony, and the 1998 Steenberg Merlot was awarded as the best
Merlot entered a the 2000 International Wine & Spirit competition
in London. In addition to being a premier wine estate, Steenberg
has been developed to include a 18-hole championship golf course.
The individual holes mirror the environmental diversity of the
area providing a varied and unique character to the course.
Constantia Uitsig meaning "Constantia
View", is situated
in the historic Constantia Valley where wine farming originated
in South Africa. A mere 20 minutes drive from the centre of Cape
Town, this beautiful valley is blessed with moderate temperatures,
excellent soils, good rainfall and cooling sea breezes from two
close-by oceans. The finest wines from over 60 Cape Estates can
be found at the Constantia Uitsig Wine Shop...
Buitenverwachting, meaning "Beyond Expectations",
forms part of the original Constantia Estate which was founded
by Governor Simon van der Stel. First sold as 200 morgen sub-division,
Buiteverwachting changed hands all too often. The beauty of the
Cape combined with exceptional cuisine and handcrafted wines,
makes Buitenverwachting a venue where the true meaning of Buitenverwachting
can be experienced.
Klein Constantia Estate is set amid trees and lush greenery
on the upper foothills of the Constantiaberg. With its historic
Cape Dutch Homestead and superb views across the valley and False
Bay, it has frequently been described as one of the world's most
beautiful vineyard locations. Klein Constantia specialises in
Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Marlbrook and
Vin de Constance, the re-creation of the legendary Constantia
wine.
Groot Constantia Estate is
where the roots of the South African wine industry lie and it
is the oldest wine producing farm in
South Africa. It was developed by Simon van der Stel in 1685.
Since then, Groot Constantia has had an uninterrupted record
of being a wine farm and its name is forever linked to the most
famous wines that were made in South Africa. Today the Estate is owned by Groot Constantia Trust, a company
without gain, whose main objective is to preserve this beautiful
and historic estate for posterity and to honour the name of South
African wine.
